Although a draft sequence of the horse genome was released in 2007 so researchers could use it immediately, two University of Minnesota professors who started the project (completed by a consortium) it is described in a paper published by Science, 6 November 2009: Vol. 326. no. 5954, pp. 865-867.
The cool thing is the findings describe that horse DNA is strikingly similar to human’s. The results show that 53% of horse’s chromosome material is similar to human’s compared to dog chromosomes which have a 29% similar sequence.
